First, check whether Line 1 fits your route
Line 1 is the Bến Thành–Suối Tiên route, heading east from the city centre. JICA’s route material identifies stations including Bến Thành, Nhà hát Thành phố, Ba Son and Thảo Điền. Match the Vietnamese names to the current station map. “Near the metro” says little about the actual walk to your destination. Sources were checked on 10 October 2026; use the operator’s current information for service and ticketing.
- Compare the whole journey: hotel to station, waiting and riding, then station to destination
- Plan SGN airport transport separately; Line 1 is not a direct airport train
Two central starting points: Bến Thành and Opera House
For the Bến Thành Market area, check which Bến Thành exit suits your destination. For the Opera House exterior and Đồng Khởi area, compare Nhà hát Thành phố station. Pin the shop or entrance you actually need before choosing an exit. For a short trip between central stops, compare walking too: weather, crossings and time spent entering and leaving stations can change the better option.
- At the check date, the operator lists Bến Thành exit 3 on Phan Chu Trinh Street beside the market; compare that side with your destination
- For a lift, first check Bến Thành exit 1, listed by the operator as having one; confirm its condition on the day
A Thảo Điền outing: the station is not the café entrance
For a café or meal in the Thảo Điền area, consider Thảo Điền station as one transport option. Check the full venue address, the route from the station and safe crossings before deciding. Different venues in the same neighbourhood may need different approaches. Choose one main stop and keep nearby browsing optional, rather than repeatedly crossing the area to complete a checklist in heat or rain.
Before paying: destination, ticket use and the return trip
JICA’s 2025 operating report documents paper QR tickets, app purchases and bank-card options. That is background, not a promise that every foreign card or mobile wallet will work today. Confirm the available method and fare with station staff. If using a phone, keep enough battery to display the valid ticket. A contactless symbol is not a reason to keep trying different cards after a failed tap.
- For one or two rides, compare single-trip totals first; check any day pass’s date, activation and limits before buying
- Follow staff instructions for the ticket or payment medium at entry and exit; ask for help if an error appears
For your first ride, keep the outing small
One flexible editorial suggestion is to reach Bến Thành or Nhà hát Thành phố from your hotel, ride to Thảo Điền, and visit one café or restaurant whose address and opening arrangements you have checked. Return when it suits your energy. This is a planning idea, not a timed or guaranteed tour. If you only want to get oriented downtown, keep the outing around Bến Thành and the Opera House and leave more time for a meal.
Plan the return and any access needs before leaving
For a late return, check the last service for your boarding station, direction and date, rather than treating a terminal departure time as the time at every stop. With a stroller, wheelchair or large bags, confirm the usable lift and exit route; ask about current equipment availability. Stay behind platform markings, keep doors clear and agree a meeting point if your group gets separated.
