Northern Vietnam
Historic streets, terraces and waterways give the north several distinct rhythms. Start in Hanoi and choose one or two extensions: mountains, countryside or the bay. There is no need to cover every direction at once.
The day-by-day plan
With five to seven days, combine Hanoi with Ninh Binh or Ha Long. Sa Pa adds a substantial journey and mountain weather considerations. For all four, extend the trip and preserve a return buffer before leaving Hanoi.
Time & season
Elevation matters: clothes suitable for Hanoi may not be enough in Sa Pa. Prepare warmth for winter and wet-weather alternatives in summer. Check current notices for cruises and mountain roads.
